Have you lost your focus?

What is focus? But more importantly, what is “focus” to you?

With all the holidays past and still to come, have they served as a welcome relief or have they been disruptive to your goals? For some, getting that long weekend to rejuvenate, rest and recompose serves as a life line, but some may feel that over the past few weeks their flow and energy has been disrupted and are struggling to get back into the swing of things, whether it be work, family, diet and exercise or just dancing off beat to the natural rhythm of life.

So, how can one find their focus again?

Focus is directly linked to ones sense of grounding, and in order to get grounded again we must set intention to allow for orientation. When we feel like we are floating about our lives, it often means that our root chakra is somewhat blocked or lacking in energy, which then has a domino effect on the other six chakras, making one feel a little out of whack and possibly slightly unhinged.

In order to root ourselves, we must first recognise the initial disruption without it bearing weight; we must acknowledge it and then simply let it go. Once we have mastered that, all the other chakras will start to realign, creating space for new intention, orientation and identity. To kick start our focus, a series of meditative exercises focusing energy into our third eye centre will boost the senses and allow us to feel clear and calm. The third eye chakra is known as “Ajna”, meaning “command”, and once we have grounded ourselves and have intention, we can then manifest that intention by energizing our third eye chakra.

Here are a couple of meditative exercises to shift your intention and focus back into gear:

Rooting yourself

  • Start by sitting in a comfortable position ensuring that the base of the pelvis is connected to the earth
  • Allow your hands to be relaxed on your lap or palms connecting to the ground
  • Elongate your spine to help energy rise up through the chakras
  • Take a deep breath in for 4-6 counts filling the lower belly first, hold the breath for 2-4 counts and exhale for 6-8 counts, repeat this as many times as you desire or until you feel like energy is flowing freely
  • Most importantly, whilst practicing this meditation we must release all desires and instincts to control internal and external events, we must allow for the observation of thoughts and feelings passing through the mind without responding or reacting to them, without them bearing weight. And finally evaluate nothing; allow all thoughts and feelings to be equal and non-judgemental.

Energising the Third Eye

  • Visualization is a powerful form of meditation
  • Find a picture or object to help you in this practice such as a flame from a candle, or a beautiful sunset or the reflection of the moon on water
  • Sitting in a comfortable position, focus only on the image or object in front of you, allowing your breath to be calm and continuous
  • Visualisation works with the laws of attraction, focusing your energy and positive affirmations towards the object or image, and in turn the energy of that object will be drawn towards you, so if we focus on the flame of a candle, you may feel reenergized, focusing on a sunset may give you feelings of warmth, love and compassion, or focusing on the moon may give you feelings of peace and calmness.
  • The object you choose will reinforce the intention you have set, and help you regain focus.

We often think that being hard on ourselves is how we can get our focus back, but it can be quite abusive and stir up negative feelings and emotions. These exercises serve as a calm and more effective way to regain focus, and only require one to take a few moments of the day to nourish and reinforce our intentions and energy.

So… set intent, get breathing, visualise and let your focus manifest.
