Hypnotherapy 101

When people hear the term hypnotherapy, the majority of the time they think back to an hypnotist show where someone has entertained them for an hour by making eager participants do things they may or may not have much recollection of doing.

A lot of people are very hesitant to engage in hypnotherapy for fear of not being in control, the beauty of it is this – your unconscious mind is highly moral, it will never allow you to do anything that is against your natural disposition. The relationship with the therapist is what will determine your accessibility. Your unconscious mind needs to trust the process and therapist who may be introducing newer/better ways of functioning.

I always stress to my clients: ‘Do not expect to feel zonked out’- you are very present and in fact are talking to me throughout our time together – ‘Do expect to feel relaxed, calm and in a meditative state’.

What most don’t realize is that hypnosis is a state of unconsciousness much like that of a trance – a level of concentration and an ability to deepen that focus. In fact we are in a state of trance many times throughout our day- driving to work and not paying attention to the route taken, reading a book, watching a series or even a movie, all of these are different versions ‘of a trance’ that we all encounter.

Understanding the reason for the hypnotherapy will also play a big part in how easily you relax. The work I do revolves around accessing negative repressed emotions that may be repeating themselves, patterns that keep recurring as a result of these stuck negative repressed emotions. Other forms of hypnosis exist and vary from weight loss to quitting smoking and even past life regression. There is something in it for everyone!
